REPORT OF THE 4TH COMENIUS MEETING

Barcelona 20 September to 4 October, 2013
Countries: Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Turkey and Spain.

Report

The fourth meeting of the project “The European teenagers between fast food and culinary tradition” was celebrated in Barcelona from September 20th to October 4th . Five of the six foreign delegations represented by 24 teachers and 30 students worked on the part of the food pyramid assigned to each country. We regret to say that the Greek delegation couldn’t come because of internal political problems.  The results of our investigation were commented and compared by all the Comenius partners and all the materials, photos, videos and activities were published in the Blog. English was the language used in all the activities and visits, so it meant a positive full immersion for both the teachers and the students.

In order to fulfil all our aims established in the basis, we organised different visits to “La Pedrera, Park Güell, the Cathedral, Gothic district, Santa María del Mar, Boqueria market, etc. As well as technical visits to:”Cavas Codorniu, Simó and Coll chocolate factory, CEMFO catering school, etc. and lunches and dinners for disseminating/ representing our traditional cuisine.  The final dinner was in one of the oldest and most typical Catalan restaurants where the partners could appreciate the typical Catalan cuisine.

It was a very interesting and productive experience for teachers, students and the school community because we were enriched with new skills and knowledge. The students could experience how Catalan families live since they stayed with them. Additionallu, they had the opportunity to taste our typical cuisine because the families tried to prepare different dishes every day. We were able to disseminate the project thanks to the collaboration of our Town Hall and local TV:TV l’Hospitalet  filmed the welcome presentation in the Town Hall and interviewed the students asking them about their implication in and their evaluation of the Comenius project.
The students   worked with students from other countries, learnt new things and could compare different habits and observe the differences and similarities. All students were very happy to present their school and tasks and get involved in the workshops prepared for them.

We want to point out the friendly atmosphere and cooperation of the group:  this project has confirmed an important aim of Comenius Project: cooperation between European students and teachers.

Detailed programme

Monday

We met our partners at school at 8.30 and after the welcome event by the headmaster, we had a look at the facilities and classrooms.
Then we went to Barcelona by train.  When we arrived in Passeig de Gràcia, Pilar our teacher explained to us the history of the modernist buildings “Casa Batlló” and “Casa Amatller”, whose explanations had been prepared by the Comenius students.  After we had a guided visit to la Pedrera.  We had a good view of the city from the roof.
We had lunch in Park Güell and which we visited after lunch.  The visit finished at 5.30.  Then the partners had time to visit “Sagrada Família” or other places

Tuesday

All the Comenius activities were based on the topic “Healthy food”, so in order to be original, we prepared two amazing visits: one to the Codorniu winery and the other one to the chocolate factory Simon Coll, both in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.  First, we saw the modernist building designed by the famous Catalan architect Puig I Cadafalch .  Our partners discovered the “cava” sparkling wine elaboration and had the chance to taste it.
Then we saw all the modernist buildings in the village and finished the day visiting the Simon Coll chocolate factory.  Delicious!!!! Chocolate is healthy, so our tip is: if you eat a daily portion of chocolate, you will feel better and less stressed.

Wednesday

Today the students from different countries have presented their work in Powerpoints or films.  All of them have worked very hard and have achieved a lot, which is very important. You can see all the presentations in the blog and in the school web.
Then we could taste the delicious dishes prepared by the students’ families (a Comenius cake, cookies, potato omelette, an enormous ice-cream, etc.).  Thank you, mums!
After the delicious breakfast, we went to see the Boqueria market where the students took photos for the future project task.
As we were in the Ramblas, we visited the cathedral, Liceo theatre, Pine tree church (where the giants were kept), Santa María del Mar and our trip ended in La Barceloneta. We went to the beach and students and teachers admired the beauty of Mediterranean Sea. We tasted delicious paella, one of our traditional dish.

Thursday

We began the day visiting our local Town Hall, where Mr. Lluís Esteve, (regidor d’ensenyament) the head of the education department in the Town Hall of Hospitalet made a welcome speech, explaining the importance of this kind of project for the students and the television of Hospitalet interviewed our students, asking them their opinion about the Comenius project and the places they had visited.
At lunch time the teachers went to visit CEMFO, our local catering school, invited by our Town Hall. We have to congratulate all the cooks, waiters and staff of that school for the delicious dishes they prepared for us and thank the Town Hall for the invitation.
Following this, we went back to school to continue working on the project.  In the afternoon the students went with their partners to buy souvenirs and some of them went to visit the Barça stadium.

Friday

It was the last day in the school for our partners, some of them left Barcelona that day and others stayed until Saturday.  We met in the school and while the teachers were planning the activities for the next meeting in Portugal, the students were playing a football match organised by our PE teacher. At 10.30 we met in the gym and after finishing the powepoint presentations, we gave them the Diplomas and the event finished with an amazing Twirling show organised by 4 students: Katy Narvaez, Isabel Serrano, Alba López and a very young and future Comenius student Paula López.

Congratulations!!

The students began to cry, especially the girls and  they promised to keep in touch mailing or by facebook. That’s love at the age of sixteen!.

To sum up, We can say that it has been an unforgettable experience for everybody.

The project. September 2012 - April 2013

Spanish Report

Last September we began our Comenius Project called “Teenagers between the culinary tradition and Fast food”.  We organised the Comenius team in the school and began to work in the project. We presented it in the teachers’ meeting “Claustre de professors” , “Consell Escolar” and in the parents’ meeting at the beginning of the school year.  Then the parents interested in allowing their sons to take part in it, had a second meeting with the coordinator of the project and signed a contract. This year we have offered an optional subject called “Comenius” for the students of the 3rd year of ESO interested in the project

Activities organised at the school in October
The students of Baccalaureate had a lecture and workshops organized by Khepra, an institution with deals with problems caused by unhealthy eating habits.  A nutritionist came to our school and organised a workshop in order to make students aware of the importance of having healthy habits. Some tips were given to our students in order to improve their eating habits. The students of the 3rd Year of ESO went to visit the “ el bus de la alimentación””healthy food bus”.  It was an exhibition about healthy eating habits organized by Caixa Catalunya .  A guide explained the students the importance of eating healthily. Our students of the 3rd year of ESO went there and the parents too.

MEETINGS
Our first meeting was in Romania in November(30th October -3 November), but only for teachers,15 in total:2 from Spain, Pilar Belloc and Darío Castro. In Romania we worked in the project. First, we presented our school, educational system, country, talked about how to increase awareness among the students and how to encourage them to eat healthily.  We could taste the traditional Romanian dishes and know  about its culinary culture. We visited the different fast food restaurants of the city. We decided the dates of the visits. .We looked for a name for the project and launched the blog with the name “Mum’s food or fast food” We designed the tasks to be done by the students for the Italian meeting. “A questionnaire about fast food or traditional food

In November, we organised a logo contest in each school  and the Spanish logo designed by Félix and Antonio Guijarro was the winner.  The students of the 3rd year of ESO of the optional subject Comenius began to interview the rest of the students of the school, made the graphs and wrote the conclusions.  These tasks are shown on our Comenius blog, created by the Spanish team, and in the Virtual Guide done by the Portuguese team.  The students tried to analyse the kind of food served in our local fast food restaurants and show the rest of the school the dangers of eating that kind of food.
In December, the students prepared the presentation of the school and their own presentations for the next meetings.  We made a selection of the students who were going to the  mobilities.
There was a meeting with the families of the students who were going to Italy.

In January, we began to create the portfolios.  Each student was responsible of a task.
The students presented the results of the questions and their work and tried to make students aware of eating healthily.
In our second meeting in Italy in February, 2 teachers (Pilar Belloc and Jordi Coll) and the students ( Kathy Narváez, Félix Guijarro and Brenda Román) presented their tasks to the other Comenius partners, saw the twins’ presentations and analyse the similarities and differences. We talked about the blog design, the virtual guide and the photo album. They could also appreciate the delicious Italian cuisine, visit a pasta, a cookie and a yogurt factory.
When they came back, they presented all the tasks shown in Italy and tried to make the rest of students aware of the importance of healthy habits.

In March the students of the 1st year of Baccalaureate studied the food Pyramid and healthy eating habits in the Science subject and made a comparative study between what they eat and what they should eat.  Unfortunately most of their pyramids were unhealthy examples, because our students don’t eat much fruit, vegetables, etc. and they really eat many sweets, chips, etc.  But it made the students think about what they should eat if they don’t want to have health problems in their lives.
All those materials prepared for the next meeting were sent to the Portuguese team in charge of the Virtual Guide.
In the meeting in Turkey,14-21 April, Patricio Analuiza, a student of Baccalaureate presented the comparative study made in the science class.   Our students who went to the meeting ( Patricio Analuiza, Tony Guijarro, Sergio Díaz, Isabel Serrano and Alba Löpez) could see their partners’ work and conclusions and compare the different cultures.  They could know a different culinary culture, country and be better aware of the importance of improving their eating habits.  We also decided the new tasks to do, for example a Pyramid contest in all the schools.  Now we are designing the pyramids and it is a good task to make students raise awareness of their eating habits.
All the students’ tasks are presented in powerpoint and can be seen in our school website and on the blog. In the students’ portfolio we can see the individual work of each student.  They work in teams and everyone has an important role in each task.  They work in a cooperative way. All the Comenius students explain their work and tasks to the rest of the students of the school in the English class, so they try to make the others aware of the importance of eating healthily.  On Saint George’s day we gave the diplomas to the students who had been to the meetings and during the ceremony we showed a powerpoint presentation of the meetings in Italy and Turkey to the rest of the students of our school.

All the activities are on the web of the school: www.iesjoanmiro.com and there was an article in the school magazine too.
To sum up, I want to say that this project is helping our students be aware of the importance of having  healthy eating habits and we hope that when it finishes, they will have change and improve their habits.

Comenius meeting in Italy

Our first day in the Italian school
It has been a wonderful experience for us, because it’s the  first  time we work with partners from different parts of Europe.  We've met at the  school at 8.30, we've visited the Castelfranco school.  It’s very different from our school, because it’s an agricultural school,a  vocational one where the students learn how to grow vegetables, there are orchards, labs etc and how to take care of a farm( how to feed animals, hens, rabbits, etc)too. They make dairy products and send them.  Today we have tasted the cheese and it's delicious!!

After lunch, our students have presented their powepoints about the questionnaire made in the school.  We could see that we have many similarities with our partners.  For instance, almost all the pupils go to fast food restaurants with friends, not very often and prefer their mum’s  food.  We have to congratulate the students of the 3rd year of ESO who take part  in this project for their work and especially to Félix Guijarro, Kathy Narváez and Julieth Román for their oral presentations in front of a large audience here.

INTRODUCTION

THE EUROPEAN TEENAGERS BETWEEN CULINARY TRADITION AND FAST FOOD

We have begun a Comenius multilateral school partnership project with seven schools from: Poland, Italy, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and Spain. This project began in September 2012 and will finish in July, 2014. Our first meeting was in Rumania, in November, 2012, where we decided to create a general blog called “Mum's food or fast food “and it will be the place where we are going to upload all the photos, comments, activities mentioned in our application form, such as the album of the project, Grandma's recipes, the healthy eating guide and the new ones we decide to do.
The aim of this project is to make student aware of the importance of having healthy eating habits. So during this project we are going to focus on the following objectives: to define and understand the meaning of healthy eating, to rediscover the culinary tradition of each country and to know other cultures through their culinary tradition. The target language will be English.
This project will help students improve their English competence, raise awareness of belonging to a common European culture and know their own culture and their partners’.   We will also promote culinary and cultural traditions, having easy access to the results obtained in the partnership.
