Fast Food Versus Traditional Food

Fast food versus Traditional Food
Our study was based on students from 3rd. Cycle (7th, 8th and 9th years) who are aged between 12 and 15 years. A questionnaire was set online for 15 days and198 students from the 255 of this Cycle answered the questionnaire, which is a good representative sample because it represents 78% of the students.
The study shows that a high percentage of the students (68.69%) know what fast food is. However, a considerable percentage of students (28.79%) associate a fast food meal to burgers and pizzas and 2.53% of the surveyed students believe that fast food is a meal based on the Food Wheel.

The survey shows us that most learners (76.26%) consume fast food less than once per week, 19.19% twice or three times per week and 4.55% more than three times a week.

More than half of respondents (66.67%) regularly consume fast food at restaurants, while 33.33% said that they usually eat fast food at home.
More than half of the students prefer pizza as fast food (58%), while 31.31% prefer burgers, 7, 07% hotdogs and 3.54% another type.

69.70% of the students stated that they consume fast food just because they like it, while 23.74% because it is more practical, 2.02% because it is "fashionable" and 4.555 for no mentioned reasons.

From the results, we found out that the majority of students (83.33%) consume traditional food at home, 11.62% at relatives’ and 5.05% at restaurants.

The results show us that more than half of the students (61.62%) eat traditional food more than three times per week and 29.80% twice to three times per week. 8.59% of students have traditional food less than once per week. Comparing these results with the frequency of fast food, we verified that the data is relatively consistent (the range does not exceed 14%).

Regarding the "traditional food" most students (82.32%) showed a consistent answer with what traditional food is.

About 42.93% of students eat traditional food because it is healthier, 33.84% because they enjoy it, 22.22% because it is the consumed one at their homes and 1.01% for another reason.

When questioned about their traditional food preferences, 33.33% of students answered cod fish, 22.22% of them Portuguese stew.

In short, from the data presented, we can infer that more than half of the students know what fast food is and they consume it because they enjoy it. Most of them consume it less than once per week, mostly at restaurants.
The preference of the surveyed students lies on pizzas and burgers.
The data also shows us that students consume less fast food and more traditional food.
Young people surveyed showed that the most famous dishes from traditional Portuguese cuisine are among their preferences.
It’s important to highlight that half of the students have traditional food because they like it and because it is healthier.
After applying this questionnaire to our students, we consider that it would be interesting to quest parents/ families about this same issue, once they are referred as people who consume and prepare fast food.

The meeting was aimed at the first contact with partners, the reformulation of initially planned mobilities, summary and planning activities to develop.
Theweek began with a visit to the host school where the different partners had the opportunity towatch specific classes of different courses. In the afternoon, the first working session, each school partners presented their own educational system, as well as the characterization of their school and region.
The host team provided all partners two very interesting study visits which provided information about the local traditions and culture.

We were also offered a visit to the house of the great sculptor Constantin Brancusi and contact with his work.
The week ended with a workshop that defined the procedures for the students’ mobility, as well as the dates of the next meetings.

2nd Meeting in Castelfranco - Italy

DSC01262.JPGOur second meeting was held in Italy, from 18 to 22 February. On this visit we took three students of the eighth grade class who were housed with host families. The week began with a visit to the host school - Instituto Superiore di Istruzione Secondary "D. Sartor "Castelfranco where, beyond the initial reception, made by its Director, the different partners had the opportunity to attend a presentation about the school. It is a school that teaches technical and practical education related to agricultural and the environmental issues. We visited Castelfranco and Montebelluna as well as fields with varied cultures (fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers) and animal husbandry. Students work in the fields with the help of appropriate machinery. The products are then sold and the money reverts to the school. We could also watch the making of cheese. During the week, in the morning, students participated in activities programmed in the host school.

Some visits were made to the cultural walls of Castelfranco, the oven Asolo, the factory PASTA ZARA, the museum in Montebelluna and the cellars at VIlla Sandi and Treviso.

Students from each country presented their school, the team of students involved in the project and the work done so far, in English (working language),

Portuguese students were highly praised, both by their performance in English as the originality and creativity of the work presented and even their interaction with others. They were, in fact, the more cherished. We teachers, we were also very happy for them.

The week ended with a "Special Dinner", at a cooking school, the Istituto di Castelfranco Alberghiero where students wove and served a delicious dinner.

This visit had the cooperation of Parents / Guardians who promptly answered all the items they were asked to including the transport of their children on trips to Lisbon.

3rd Meeting in Antalya - Turkey

The third meeting of the Comenius Project "The European teenagers between fast food and culinary tradition" was held in Antalya (Turkey), 14-19 April. On this visit we took four students (three 9th graders and one 8th grader) who were hosted by Turkish families.
In the host school - Yusuf Ziya Oner Fen Lisesi "in Antalya, a public boarding school located in the rural area of Antalya which aims to train students in science we were greeted by a director and an" Opening Ceremony ".
The heavy rain and some electricity problems forced a change of the scheduled programming, but luckily on Tuesday the sun came back.
The host partner prepared varied tours: the yogurt factory Yörükoğlu, where we watched the process of production of yogurt, the falls of Düden, the tourist center of Kaleiçi, where the five-star hotels completely stunned us, a boat trip with lunch on board and lots of entertainment (dance and song), the cultural visits to the oldest Antalya - Demre, Myra, Perge, Silyon, Aspeados.

 Portuguese Comenius Report

After the approval of the project “The European teenagers between culinary tradition and fast food” our shool direction nominated the Comenius team on September 2012. Then we divulgated the project at school  through our school site http://www.agilpaes.pt/ , articles in local press and by choosing the right place at school for our “Comenius Corner”.

The Portuguese Comenius team also created a Wikispace called europe4you – both to spread and motivate other teachers, staff and students’ parents and to show all the work done about the Project, information and photos about the meetings.

Our next task was to decide about the target group of students. We chose the older students (8th and 9th graders) according to the other partner schools. The students’ group is of fourteen students. But the work at school is going to be made by all the five classes.

Our first activity at school was the celebration of the “World Food Day” on 16th October 2012. We invited parents and students to participate in debates about “Nutritionism” and they were very motivated to the subject and checked their own health through “Blood Pressure” and “Blood Sample” campaigns. It was a successful partnership with the Local Health Centre, doctors, nurses and psychologist.

We also promoted a “Healthy Menus Contest” and the winner one was prepared by the 1st graders from EB1 Visconde de S.Gião. The 6th graders also made some works related to the event and organized an “Exhibition and a “Green market at school” with fruit sale; the 8th graders wrote a commentary about their personal eating habits. Urban Corps, a local organization connected with gymnastics, promoted a nutritional evaluation among our teachers, students and other staff.

At school we created the “Office of information and student’s support” that is opened everyday and the students can go there freely to talk about the subjects they want, ask for advice in the issues that worry them.

In the first meeting of the Project (Targu-Jiu, Romania from 29th October until 2nd November 2012), we met the other Comenius partners, learnt about their educational systems, created the Blog of the Project:  http://foodorfastfood.blogspot.com (by the Spanish team), defined the dates for the next meetings,  divided the students for each visit and set the deadline for the “Logo Contest” . We also made a questionnaire about “Fast food versus traditional food” to be applied to the  students  and data processing and public presentation of the results to be presented in the next meeting in Italy.

In the second meeting (Montebelluna, Italy from 18th until 22nd February 2013) we tried to define a better structure for the Blog of the Project and defined the deadline for the “Virtual Guide“ (by the Portuguese team,  until 8th March).

In the third meeting in Antalya, Turkey (14th – 19th April 2013) the Portuguese team presented the “Virtual Guide” of the Project:  http://comeniusgtpr.wix.com/virtualfoodguide  and were defined the deadlines for the next activities to be done until the next meeting in Barcelona (Spain – 30th September – 5 th October 2013). Each country was responsible for doing the study of one food group (until  the end of June);  beginning the study on the topic “How does our traditional food take part in the food pyramid?  (only a draft for the meeting in Barcelona) and “Our Food Pyramid Poster Contest” until 15th September. The Portuguese team will send the Contest Regulation to the other partners. Were also clarified all the folders on the Blog and was added another folder “Diary” for the quarterly reports.

Before each visit the students prepared their own presentation about their school and the activities done in the context of the project. After each visit they did a report about their experiences in a foreign country and what were their feelings about it in what concerns its culture, culinary tradition, people, etc.

After each visit to the different partner schools we wrote some information about the meetings that was posted, with some photos, on the following school website: http://www.agilpaes.pt and sent to the local press to be published.

In conclusion I can say that the project objectives have been fulfilled: the students and their parents are more and more concerned about their children healthy eating habits and at the same time they are much more motivated to the beneficts of the culinary tradition. On the other hand the students have been developed  their language skills in English and their research methods.
